Independence vs Freedom

What is independence? What is freedom?

We gained independence but the struggle for freedom still continues.

I celebrate the freedom fighters that gave us our independence and I continue to hold dear and iconize the current freedom fighters who are active today ensuring that we are truly free.

Freedom today sadly is available to the highest bidders. We fought for our land yet land injustice still remains the biggest issue. We fought for fair-paying jobs and fair taxation, not exploitation yet we don’t see that on our payslips. We fought for fair ruling yet we punish more the poor in our courts. The common man does not enjoy the liberties he ought to.

In a colonized Kenya our assets and resources were forcefully taken away by the colonialists, today in an independent Kenya the story is the same but the players are different. If our head of state confirmed that (2) two billion is stolen on a daily basis by a few corrupt Kenyans how can I say that we are truly free and independent?

Everyone is naturally born free and equal in dignity and rights as per our constitution. The idea of others dominating a segment of a population on the basis of religion, gender, educational level, tribe, financial muscle, race, and physical appearances, and physical limitations has in a way abused our freedom and to larger extent independence.

Neocolonialism has found its way back in our country through the debts we have taken. We have to do heavy consultations as a nation so that we don’t annoy our debt masters. We are physically free but continue to be mind-chained.

As we celebrate our independence today let us remember that the struggle continues. Freedom is always fought for and never given freely. Be our hero today and continue to champion true freedom. Let Kenya be for all of us and not for the highest bidders and let plenty be found within our borders.

Baraka Tele!
